Habitat’s ReStore

A decade ago the Campus Ministry phone would ring regularly regarding requests for furniture; someone once homeless just left transitional housing, someone got evicted and lost their belongings, etc. Those calls stopped coming as more Habitat for Humanity ReStores opened up throughout Jersey, coincidence or not—a good thing for the marginalized, because now they had CHOICE in how to furnish their dwellings. For educational purposes, however, Immaculata lost that window into the world of the poor, seeing firsthand how they live through the furniture delivery program. Well… maybe not entirely.

Almost exactly a year ago one of those ReStores opened up close by in Manville and during this past Garage Sale a relationship was forged. We found an additional means for parting with heavy items that didn’t sell and Habitat learned about our delivery program. Fast-forward to tonight.

A few weeks ago Habiat ReStore had their first mission for us. A marginalized woman had no means of transporting goods to her new apartment—The Spartans came to the rescue and that story is now history and told best through these photos. Today our volunteers helped an excellent institution, Habitat for Humanity, continue to turn people’s “trash” into houses, while saving the landfills and empowering the aspirations of a relocated family—Triple victories are our favorite in Spartan Nation.
